How to Clean a Laptop Keyboard Safely

Updated October 29, 2026 · 5 minute read

Crumbs, dust and that faint stickiness from years of snacking at the desk are behind a lot of "broken" keyboards. A careful clean fixes more than you'd expect, and it takes about ten minutes. The main thing is to be gentle. Laptop keyboards are delicate, and most damage comes from people being too aggressive.

What you'll need

A can of compressed air, a soft brush (a clean paintbrush works), a microfibre cloth, some isopropyl alcohol around 70 percent, and a few cotton swabs. That's it. Skip the kitchen sprays and wet wipes.

Switch it off first

Shut the laptop down properly and unplug the charger. Cleaning while it's on can trigger random key presses, and it's riskier if any moisture gets involved.

Get the loose stuff out

Hold the laptop at an angle with the keys facing down and tap the back gently. You'll be surprised what falls out. Don't shake it hard.

Use compressed air the right way

Keep the can upright and use short bursts, moving across each row at a slight angle so dust is pushed out instead of deeper in. Long continuous sprays can release cold liquid propellant, which is the last thing you want near electronics.

Brush, then wipe

Sweep between the keys with the brush. Then dampen the cloth with a little alcohol. Damp, not dripping. Wipe the keycaps, and use a lightly dampened cotton swab for the gaps around a key that feels sticky. Give everything a few minutes to dry before you switch on.

Test the keys afterwards

Open the Keyboard Tester and press every key. It's the quickest way to catch one that's still sluggish.

Things to avoid

Don't spray anything straight onto the keyboard. Don't use bleach or strong solvents. And don't pop keycaps off a laptop unless you know your exact model, because the small clips underneath are fragile and easy to break.

If you spill a drink

Speed matters more than anything else. Power the laptop off straight away, unplug it, and tip it so the liquid runs away from the keyboard. Blot the surface, skip the hot hairdryer, and leave it to dry for a day or longer. Sugary drinks leave residue behind, so if keys stay sticky afterwards, get a technician to look at it. If the laptop is under warranty, contact the maker before you open anything.
